Employee Relations Advisor

We are looking for an Employee Relations Advisor in Croydon to join a fast paced enviroment for a rewarding role.
You will provide first-line Human Resources advice and support to employees and managers, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and good employment practices. This role involves close collaboration with the Senior Employee Relations Advisors and HR Business Partnering team to deliver an effective HR service. The ER Advisor will be the initial point of contact for all general HR inquiries, offering efficient, responsive, and reliable advice. Additionally, the ER Advisor will support ER Officers and administrators by providing expertise and advice on complex queries.

Key Responsibilities:
Sickness Absence Management:

  1. Provide first-line advice and guidance to managers on managing short-term and long-term sickness absence in line with the Trust’s Sickness and Attendance Management Policy, including support for termination hearings.
  2. Communicate complex and sensitive information regarding ill-health retirement and redeployment processes to both management and employees.
  3. Complete detailed and accurate ill-health retirement applications in partnership with the individual, manager, and national pension agency.
  4. Assist managers in reducing sickness absence through active management, supporting and advising on all sickness review meetings.
  5. Lead on stage 3 short-term and final review long-term absence cases, supporting managers during these hearings and providing compassionate support to individuals.
  6. Collaborate with Senior ER Advisors and the ER Manager to prepare case materials for appeals and support managers during hearings.
  7. Liaise with Occupational Health for guidance on complex sickness cases and participate in regular case conferences to ensure effective management and resolution.
  8. Utilize ESR sickness data to manage sickness cases, providing information on pay status as needed.
  9. Monitor long-term sickness absence cases to ensure compliance with pay reinstatement policies and escalate issues to senior leadership.
  10. Support the management of statutory annual leave rollover for managers and individuals.
  11. Identify potential hotspots and work with the HR Business Partnering team and Occupational Health to address local issues.
Employee Relations:
  1. Interpret and advise managers on Trust policies to ensure compliance and offer general HR advice to all staff.
  2. Lead on Flexible Working applications and appeals, advising managers on the implications of flexible working requests.
  3. Handle cases related to expired professional registrations, including disciplinary and suspension hearings.
  4. Manage cases involving fixed-term contracts due to expire, supporting managers with relevant hearings.
  5. Prepare and distribute formal hearing packs for sickness and Flexible Working cases.
  6. Take and transcribe notes for formal Employee Relations Meetings and Hearings.
  7. Update ESR case management systems and trackers to ensure accurate reporting.
  8. Provide first-level support on employee relations issues, escalating complex cases as needed.
  9. Offer coaching and guidance to managers on informal resolution meetings.
  10. Participate in the development and updating of HR policies, working with trade unions to ensure swift adoption.
General HR Support:
  1. Provide general advice on Agenda for Change terms and conditions, and Trust employment policies, referring complex queries to Senior ER Advisors or HR Business Partners.
  2. Assist Senior ER Advisors and HR Business Partners with minute-taking, hearing pack preparation, and responding to general HR queries.
  3. Direct staff and managers to appropriate policies and template letters.
  4. Support the collation of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, ensuring accurate and timely responses.
  5. Handle general inquiries and ensure accurate correspondence and message relay.
  6. Run reports and analyze complex data, presenting findings to senior leaders to identify potential interventions.
Training:
  1. Assist in delivering training sessions for managers on HR policies.
  2. Provide one-on-one support to managers on procedures and policies.
Finance/Payroll:
  1. Submit monthly reports to the payroll liaison team to minimize incorrect overpayments and monitor long-term sickness cases.
  2. Ensure accurate reporting of information to e-rostering and work with managers to maintain payroll accuracy.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Proven experience in an HR advisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and employment legislation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage complex and sensitive cases with compassion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in HR software and data analysis.
